How Windows Can Keep Your Home Cool without Air Conditioning

iStock_000000873482_LargeMemorial Day is often considered the unofficial start to summer.  Is your home ready for the warmer weather?  Here are a few tips to help you keep your home cool without cranking the air conditioning!

Cooling Tips:
  • Close Your Curtains - When sunlight enters your house, it also warms it.  Close the curtains during the hot part of the day to keep warm air outside.
  • Install Awnings - According to the U.S. Department of Energy, awnings can help reduce heat from the sun by up to 77%!  Install them on the south and west facing windows for best results.
  • Add Shutters - Adding shutters to your windows is more than just an aesthetic addition.  Shutters also protect against the weather and help you control just how much sunlight you let in.
  • Add Window Film - Applying window film to your home’s windows will help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  They improve the overall energy-efficiency of your windows.
