Common Causes of Windshield Cracks

A nick, chip, and suddenly — a giant crack! We’ve all been there. That little ding in your windshield that you swore you’d get fixed has now become a major, full-blown, windshield crack. Whether you realized it was happening or not, it’s now time to get it fixed, but do you know what could have caused it? To avoid a major crack in the future, you must first be aware of the most common causes of windshield cracks:
Though rare, a sweltering hot day can leave older vehicles with a broken windshield. Extreme temperature changes, as well as direct sunlight, can cause your windshield to bend and possibly crack around the edges, and with a little heat, that small dent in your windshield can now spread. To avoid any damage, park your car away from direct sunlight or invest in a windshield visor.
Probably the most common form of windshield cracks — sand, rocks, and other flying road debris wreak havoc on windshields. Beyond leaving their mark, they can quickly spread leaving you with the need for a brand new windshield. If you are driving behind a truck or car that is kicking up rocks, move over or pass them. That gravel and dirt they are throwing your way can cost you unnecessary money in the long run.
A small chip can lead to a weak spot in your windshield. An easy fix, windshield chips often go overlooked until the problem becomes far worse and often leads to a shatter or crack. If a rock or road debris causes a mark in your windshield, get it fixed as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
